WHAT IS MASCULINIZING CHEST SURGERY?

Top surgery is the procedure to create a masculine chest on transgender men. The process involves removing fat and glandular tissue and sculpting a masculine upper chest. The breasts are removed with a mastectomy, with the female breast tissue removed so the upper chest appears sculpted and trim.

HOW IS MASCULINIZING CHEST SURGERY DONE?

Excess breast tissue is removed with a combination of surgical excision techniques. The areola complex is resized and repositioned for a more traditionally masculine appearance. The doctors of Align Surgical will select the appropriate technique according to your unique anatomy and aesthetic goals.

PERIAREOLAR/CIRCUMAREOLAR
(KEYHOLE)

Using this technique, an incision is made on the areolar border, allowing the surgeon to remove breast tissue and reshape the chest through a minimal incision. This approach is ideal for those with minimal breast tissue and good skin elasticity.

DOUBLE INCISION

For patients who require a more significant level of breast reduction, two horizontal incisions in an elliptical fashion are used to remove excess breast tissue and skin. The final incision line will rest at the lower border of the pectoralis muscle. The nipples and areolas are typically removed as skin grafts, resized, and repositioned on the chest. The Double Incision approach is performed in the vast majority of patients seeking top surgery.

BUTTONHOLE

This approach is similar to the double incision method but repositions and resizes the nipple areolar complex with the goal of maximizing nipple sensitivity.

INVERTED T

For those with medium to large chests and an abundance of skin, an inverted T incision is used that goes down to the inframammary fold and then horizontally across the bottom of the breast.

WHO MAKES A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR MASCULINIZING CHEST SURGERY?

Performing your surgery safely is paramount at Align Surgical. The ideal candidate for top surgery is healthy, motivated, and has a good social support group. If you have any medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or obesity, we will work with your primary care provider to help optimize your health and prepare you for surgery. Patients who smoke will need to quit at least one month prior to their surgery, as smoking can significantly delay and complicate recovery.
