Successful surgery preparation starts well before the day of your procedure. Taking care of the practical details ahead of time can help you feel more organized, better supported, and more ready for the early recovery period.

At Align Surgical Associates in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California, our dedicated surgeons and staff stay closely involved with your care at every step, so you know what to expect, how to prepare, and where to turn to for support or questions.

Before Surgery

Review your surgical instruction packet carefully before surgery and talk with your doctor about any medications, herbs, or supplements you use regularly. Your surgeon may ask you to stop certain medications or make temporary changes to your diet before surgery. If you smoke or vape, you will need to stop well in advance of your procedure.

It also helps to plan for your transportation to and from surgery, any childcare responsibilities, meal prep, time away from work, or other support you may need while you recover.

Setting up Your Recovery Space

Whether you are planning to recover at home or you are traveling for surgery, a dedicated recovery space is crucial during your early healing.

We recommend:

  • Picking up your prescriptions in advance, if your surgeon sends them ahead of time
  • Getting loose-fitting clothing that is easy to put on and take off
  • Gathering recovery essentials such as pillows, compression garments, cold compresses, dressings, or other supplies your care team recommends
  • Preparing a space with the items you may want close by, such as water, medications, snacks, a phone charger, and entertainment

It also helps to plan for how you’ll rest after surgery. Some patients prefer sleeping in a recliner, if available, while others find that a variety of pillows (including wedge-shaped bolsters) can help them create a more supported, slightly elevated sleeping position.

The Day Before and Day of Surgery

Follow any fasting, hydration, showering, and medication instructions exactly as directed. On surgery day, wear loose, comfortable clothing and leave valuables at home. If your procedure involves any additional preparation steps, our team will review those with you ahead of time.

After Surgery

While many gender-affirming surgeries can be done on an outpatient basis, some may require a hospital stay as you heal. Swelling, bruising, tenderness, and discomfort are to be expected after surgery, but prescription and OTC pain medication can make the earliest days more manageable.

Depending on the procedure, your recovery may also involve:

  • Dressings and incision care
  • Compression garments
  • Surgical drains
  • Suture removal at a follow-up visit

Some patients may also benefit from supportive recovery services such as lymphatic drainage massage or hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), depending on the procedure and recovery plan.

After-Hours Surgical Support

Our clinical team is available after hours for urgent medical concerns. Please review our guidelines before calling so we can prioritize issues that need immediate attention. For life-threatening emergencies, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.
