Genioplasty is a gender-affirming facial procedure that reshapes or repositions the chin. It can be used to change chin projection, height, width, or position to support a more feminizing or masculinizing lower-face contour.

At Align Surgical Associates in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California, genioplasty is used to refine chin position, shape, and projection within the lower face. It may be part of a broader facial surgery plan or performed on its own as a more focused procedure.

What Is Genioplasty?

Genioplasty refers to surgery that changes the shape or position of the chin. It can be used to change the chin’s width, make it longer or shorter, or move it forward, backward, or side to side, depending on your embodiment goals.

Our Commitment to You.

Your plan starts with what matters most to you, such as function, sensation, privacy, recovery realities, and your day-to-day life.

Who Might Consider Genioplasty?

Genioplasty may be a meaningful option for transgender individuals, nonbinary patients, and other gender-diverse people seeking changes in chin shape, projection, or position. Many of our patients choose this procedure to bring their chin into better proportion with the rest of their face rather than changing it in isolation.

Understanding Your Genioplasty Options

The right approach to genioplasty depends on the type of chin adjustment needed, the extent of structural change, and whether your goals are better supported by moving the bone itself, adding an implant, or using a volume-based approach.

Sliding Genioplasty

Sliding genioplasty is the most structural option. In this procedure, the surgeon cuts the chin bone and repositions it to change its location.

Chin Implants

Chin implants change the contour and projection of the chin using a synthetic implant.

Dermal Fillers and Fat Transfer

Fillers and fat transfer can alter the shape of the chin by adding volume to the chin and surrounding areas.

We’ll walk you through how each option works so you can choose an approach that fits your goals and the type of change you’re considering.

Six surgeons. Two locations. One specialized focus.

Some surgeons "offer" gender-affirming surgery among many other services. For Align, it's the center of our life's work. Our 6 board-certified surgeons have committed themselves wholly to gender-affirming care and research. This means we aren't just helping patients reach their embodiment goals; we are helping to make their care better—better understood, better supported, and performed in the best way possible. What Is Recovery Like After Genioplasty?

After genioplasty, most patients should expect swelling, bruising, activity restrictions, and tightness or tenderness in the lower face during early healing. Recovery depends on whether the chin is being surgically repositioned, treated with an implant, or altered with volume-based treatment, as well as whether the procedure is performed on its own or with other facial surgery.

How Much Does Genioplasty Cost in San Francisco and Los Angeles?

Gender-affirming care, including genioplasty, is often covered by insurance. If you are using insurance, we will guide you through the authorization process and what to expect.

If you prefer to pay out of pocket, we will give you a personalized quote based on your surgical plan, including whether your genioplasty involves sliding genioplasty, an implant-based approach, or volume-based treatment.

Risks and Considerations

As with any procedure, genioplasty carries risks, such as bleeding, infection, swelling, bruising, healing concerns, and contour irregularities. Risks can also vary depending on whether the surgery involves repositioning the chin bone, placing an implant, or using injectables or fat transfer.

Genioplasty FAQ

What is the difference between sliding genioplasty and a chin implant?

Sliding genioplasty repositions the chin bone itself. A chin implant changes the contour of the chin with a silicone implant rather than moving the existing bone.

Is genioplasty used in both facial feminizing and facial masculinizing surgery?

Yes. Genioplasty may be used in both facial feminizing and facial masculinizing surgery, depending on how the chin needs to be reshaped or repositioned within the larger facial plan.

When are fillers or fat transfer used instead of surgical genioplasty?

Fillers or fat transfer may be used when added volume is the main goal and a more structural chin procedure is not necessary.
